A birth certificate is a document that records your birth.  It contains information such as where you were born, the name given to you at birth and your mother’s name. It is usually a large sheet of paper. You can get a copy if you lose your birth certificate as the details are held in a central office in England.

Why do I need it?

You need a birth certificate to obtain other forms of identification.  You need a birth certificate to obtain a driving licence and a passport. It will make your life easier if you have one.

How do I get one?

If your birth was registered in the UK, you need to register on the General Register Office (GRO) website.  You will need to pay to obtain a certificate.
